You guys should have seen the mortar we built for WWII reinacting. Full scale replica of a German mortar with real bi-pod and optics. Used PVC tube rounds that could be rapid fired like the real deal. PM me for details, but it did not use compressed air. BOOM!!

That's a great design, simple. But I'm not sure that'd be legal in CA.

probably really illegal but use a blank round maybe a 9mm or a 22? have a pin at the bottom and the force of it sliding down should be enough.... just a thought :D

probably bad news, but its going to be very hard to make a system that you hang a round and it fires itself when it hits the bottom of the tube. Simply because for it to fall down the tube with enough force to set its self off it will have to have a relatively loose fit and that will give bad compression.

Those CO2 capsules take quite a lot of force to pierce the top. Its unlikely that we can use a projectile that is heavy enough to pierce the top and still be an effective projectile.

yea or just weight the whole piece?

hmmmm maybe a lever operated valve such as those seen on air-powered potato guns..... also it fairly strong... potatoes roughly same size wieght and shape... and many instructions online... i do believe this would be one of your better options and some use a bike pump so its 100% portable! :P just a thought :?

If you used a lever action to actuate the release of propellant, then it defeats the purpose of a true mortar. You have essentially used an RPG as a mortar. TK here is going for as realistic as possible.

Was def. not expecting to see this thread resurrected, so this is a pleasant surprise.

I'm interested in helping in the design, still a bit far away to show for builds.

I'll be honest, the only reason I like the compressor and tank is 'cause I'm a cheap bastard :P

It does sound like it would work. making it automatic would take some a little research to find a small dc air pump with decent performance for cheap. either design would benefit from a tank for gas storage or expansion (in the case of co2).

The MK I mortar tube was 2 inches. The mortar "rounds" were 8 inches of 1.5 inch PVC with connectors at the end. We used practice golf balls that were weighted with copper BBs as ammo.

I know the ones you are talking about. The weight of them is just off enough so that they have the same aerodynamic qualities as a trash can launch from a civil way cannon.

Assuming you bought it all off Ebay?

Hey, was looking around and look what my search fu has brought up.

Are those weighted?

Does not say. However, there is quite a lot of information you may want to check out about your mortar and your next possible build. Google 'Milsim Lab.' 1st link. They show you how to make your own ammo for pennies and various other useful tadbits of info.
