I don't know what's the better saying: "Necessity is the mother of invention.” or “ Boredom is the bastard child of invention.” In either case, I was thinking about this project when I first saw the headphones at the surplus store. The curve made me think right away “Will those fit under my helmet?” Well, after a good long conversation of mixed things with a friend, I bought a pair.

I got a pair of peltors...are these knock offs actual comms? or just plastic earmuffs?

These are AstroCom H251/U Radio/Radar headsets. No Passive Cancelation, not functioning electronics.

What surplus store did you find those in?
