Is there a PC nerd in the house????

Oct 9, 2008 2:08am
So thanks to one of my daughters and their careless net surfing. They ended up bogging down my PC with "toolbars", spyware, and other computer junk that I manage (up tilll now) to avoid. The little fartknockers seemed to find all the cobwebs and garbage that took me all day to remove. All but one issue. I used to be able to just type just a phrase in the address bar of my browser. For instance, Sacairsoft. What used to happen is that it would take me straight to here. Now, it goes to Ask.com and shows me search results for Sacairsoft. Does any one of you know how I can fix this?

Well bud. For the most part, ya told me what I already got going, such as the AVG, Spybot, cleaners and what not. I'd already taken care of all that. The issue that I'm having is that when I type in a phrase in the address bar of my net browser (Firefox), it sends me to Ask.com with the search results instead of taking me straight to the site. If I want to go to sacair (same example), I would have to type in the whole address like www.sacairsoft.com instead of just typing in "sacairsoft". So how would I fix THAT?

Hey, I was just hitting those points because I'm not sure what you've already done :)

Try removing firefox and redowloading it.

Other than that...I don't know. Run updates if you can...and if it doesn't work, a reinstall of the program -may- help.

If that still does not work you can use hijackthis to find what processes are running on your computer and search the results with google. Someone most likely has run into the same spyware before and has posted up the results. Hopefully you can find a forum that has specific instructions to remove it.

I must say, defrag does not help.

Hey! Your Mom's problem.......Try combofix. You'll have to do a google search, but there are quite a few tech sites that possess the links for it. It's a program that uses your DOS prompt to operate but it is effective. As you can tell, I've been hijacked like that before.

Bordicon. Thanks. I found it. It was a redirect. I simply right clicked over the line and chose the "reset" option. I knew it had to be some type of an easy fix somewhere. Thanks fellas.

You should also only have ONE antivirus program installed at a time, feel free to install any or all of the anti spyware/malware stuff described by others.

since Avast has yet to make it into enterprise or corporate level business, sounds like avast is still sucking the main mast.

Maybe not for corporate use but it rocks for home use without taking up much resources. Also great for cleaning up nOOb-puters like when friends have ten trojans hang'n out and doing their thing.

Let me just say this about AVG. It's better than NOTHING.
