Today...
I work for a court reporting firm as a delivery guy and I drive around in my 1965 Volkswagen. I went into one of my stops to drop off a transcript and while walking back toward my car I heard my door slam. Its a 1965 Volkswagen, my door slamming has a very distinct sound. I was behind a large pillar so I couldn't see my car, but I heard it. As my car came into view I saw a Mexican man standing by it just looking. I'm so used to people being close to my car, I just assumed that he was admiring my car, not that he was trying to steal my stuff. So I walk toward him and asked,"Were you just in my car?"

Wow, that sucks. At least you only lost a cup holder and didn't get stabbed. I had someone steal my car a few years ago and my wallet and several hundred dollars worth of camping gear, motorcycle parts, and tools in it. I got the car back a few days later with more stuff in it then I left it with???? The only thing they took was the wallet (with no cash) and my CD's (90% of which were burned punk CD no one would want anyway). They left a TON of brand new clothes and a ski jacket (and a crack pipe) in the car when they left it. Just goes to show that thieves are retarded.

Wow that is a wierd thing, good decision to go after him, just in case!

I have been doing LP work for nearly three years now. I understand where you are coming from. I have chased down people over 30$. Almost every time I have had a knife or a shiv pulled on me it has been during a pursuit. Unless your the equivalent of Chuck Norris (im not) don't pursue. I have gotten lucky that the people who have pulled had little to no knife training and I have had more. I understand though about the transcripts. That is some confidential stuff. Atleast you wised up and backed off when he was reaching.

Be glad that the guy didnt kick your ass and call the police on you...You have no evidence he did anything. You heard a door close and a guy was standing next to your car....no crime.

None of which you knew when you chased him.. from your story you were "almost certain" he took your ipod when you chased him. For all you knew at the time your door was open and he closed it. All you saw was him standing there looking at your car. Legally you have no right to detain him since you did not witness him commit a felony so any physical action you take is assault. Its late and I haven't had much sleep in the past 24 hours but I'm pretty sure thats how the law reads.

The fact remains that your are irresponsible enough to leave an ipod and "$1000,s of documents" in an unsecure automobile. I highly doubt it was secure and even so if it was. If your job deals with delivering and securing sensitive documents, why don't you have an alarm? I await your know it alll answer

Meh, you probably did the wrong thing, but hindsight is 20/20. Cant really take it back and you are still breathing so that's the important thing.
I don't carry a gun to scare people.
If I had walked out and saw (or thought I saw) someone breaking into my car, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same. It's easy to say, "it's not worth it you were wrong", but I understand where he's coming from. I was so angery when my car was stolen I probally would have killed the person had I seen them doing it. Not saying its' right, I'm just saying it's different sitting here talking about it now, then it is actually being in the situation.

To make a citizens arresst on theft you need to see 1. Approach 2. Select 3. Concealment 4. And not paying. It is more for retail theft. You need to have All that so you can prove the guilt remember our jury system works off of proof without Any reasonable doubt how could you prove that to a jury? You can't and once the defense attorney starts grilling you about you being sure you would been screwed esspscially if in your police statement you said fairly sure. That is not 100%

But please, don't ever leave your child in a car unattended. It only takes a matter of seconds for an abduction or worse.
