i know the store bought ones are usually ok, but what about homemade ones? its the same stuff just made by yourself.

Negative on pyro-based smoke. If you have cold smoke, that's a definite go. But cold smoke is relatively expensive, about 20 bucks a pop if I recall correctly.
yea NAM field in the summer= any open flame and everything will go up in flames since its really dry.

Events where pyro will be OK is designated fireworks spots on July 4th. Sacair games and airsoft in general throughout California that would be a big negative.
