Download OpenOffice (free and open source) and set it to save all files as windows office files by default. I can walk you through it if you're interested.

I second OpenOffice. Same capabilities and free. Never had a issue with it saving or opening Office documents. It worked good for my application, where I needed a word processor and have the added programs of office, at a lower storage volume.

the problem with open office is: word doesn't like the reverse documents and will not open them smoothly if at all. they are two very different codes and just because it will open word doesn't mean it open flawlessly, ALOT of the times you have to reformat your document more so if you have charts and pictures, so communicating with someone who only uses word or office will be difficult. It does not work like word nor accept the same programing or options, so someone who uses word and knows word will find it very frustrating. The data bases don't work the same as the office sweet does. On its own its a good little program but its not in the same category as office, just like notepad is not word even if you can open .doc files with it.
