Need Laptop brand advice
Currently I am typing this on a Dell Inspiron 1520 purchased 2 Decembers ago so it is 1yr 5months old. The other day I got a message saying "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
alright, the thing about ailienware is you are buying a name, as far as parts, im pretty sure they are the same. so if the specs are better on the dell, i would go for that one. but rember to get the warranty
Dude get a Dell or what ever best buy has on sale that week

With alienware, you are getting extreme durability. Personally, I would get an HP, which is what I just got recently (dv5). I think they're a little cheaper than Dell, and they look cooler than Dell.

I have the same dell laptop in 1530 configuration and I'm really impressed with the performance. The 1920x1200 resolution is amazing. The difference between the Alienware and the Dell two is pretty much external looks and brand name. I would suggest that you get the best warranty possible, because most people I know with Dell's new series of laptops has had something malfunction.
dell is mass produced by the texas penal system, aleinware is single hand made, usually abetter warrenty.
You get the most bang for your buck with the following brands...
I will never buy another Dell because their service, even with a premium service contract, sucks on ice.

I've never had a problem with service from dell with my laptop or my moms. Apparently the XPS systems are made to order so no mass production there. Been looking at xoticpc for a while now and I like the parts that they put in them but there doesn't seem to be as much customization possible on their site. I'm thinking Dell it is since I get 7% off with the government employee purchase program. Their warranty though is outrageous... over $100 more for each year you add on for basic service.
I've yet to have any problems with Dell's service too. I've had an XPS desktop and XPS laptop and both Dell has replaced parts free of charge on both. Plus, Dell has a chat service now, so no more waiting on the phone for someone who speaks English as a second language.
17" screen on the Dell? I thought you wanted a laptop?

My family has had bad experience with Dell products and customer service but then again you never know.
ordered the XPS today... found a 7% discount for Govt Employeed Purchase program and another 4% for using a dell account which will be closed shortly after the laptop arrives as well as free shipping thats going on right now for anything over 799. I'll post the specs if someone is interested but I won't bore you with the exact list unnecessarily.
How much did it run you?

~$1350 after tax... sprung for a creative labs expresscard sound card at the last second which bumped it up a bit from what it would have been with the discounts but still cheaper than without them.... I decided to add either more processor, 6gb ram, blu ray or this and this was the only one that kept it under the original estimate before discount.
That is a solid price! Hope everything goes well for you and your new laptop.
