My old 9.6 3600mah battery is in all practical purposes dead, it doesn't hold a charge anymore. Is there anyway to save this thing or is it useless now?

It most likely is 1 or maybe 2 bad cells. The whole pack could be rebuilt but you will need to know what cell/cells are bad. A voltage test for each cell needs to be done so you can isolate the bad cell/cells.
