I'm thinking about joining. Silly ambition for a 13 year old I know but, I just wanted to get any tips for school throughout the rest of my remaining public schooling. And don't worry, I won't question anybody's opinions or tips.

When you go to college if you plan on commissioning as soon as you graduate, you'll have to sign up for ROTC. I would definitely reccomend doing the 2yr ROTC route... talk to them your first year to get a feel for them, maybe go to a few pt sessions throughout the year but don't take the classes or contract. Start going regularly and getting serious about it the 2nd half of the Sophomore year so you can start your background packet and all the paperwork will be filled out before you leave for the summer to go to LTC.

I'm sorry, ROTC?

To be considered prior service.
Sep 18, 2009 2:18am
ya you do... you talking about SMP? SMP is different from prior service. If you're prior service then when you commission you get paid O1E instead of O1.

I wasnt talking about SMP... Read the posts above mine.

I see a small problem with ROTC. It give you the Bar of the Second Lieutenant upon graduating. I see that as a free pass to screw up, because I would have no prior field experience. Is this a valid problem, or am I just looking at it in the wrong point of view?

Wait, nevermind. I reread the LTC part. That would have been good to do before asking my prior question.

Ya even without going to ROTC you still have 4 years of training.. you're not just thrown into a unit knowing absolutely nothing. After you finish ROTC then you still have OBC which varies in length depending on your branch. You definitely have to work for your commission, you don't just show up, graduate and get pinned. But when you get to your unit you won't know anything about your specific job in comparison to all the enlisted that have been there for a while.

I really should go talk to a recruiter, but since we are talking about it :P

if you enlist you don't commision.
Sep 18, 2009 3:22am
stay in school, and try out the ROTC program. That will allow to experiance college, with a little military thrown in. From there, you can figure out if you like it or not, without being contracted to join the branch.

Well I don't have much life experiences being only 17 but one thing for sure. Focus on school. I seriously slacked off in school because I knew I was going to enlist. I am currently a Marine poolee but in the event I wanted to do something I would be screwed. That's one thing I regret, I however do not regret enlisting, just that I did not keep all possibilities. Schooling means alot and trust me I am the last person to praise school.
Russel Crowe- whether its a skirt in gladiator or tights in master and commander, he can still kick your ass.
