Crystalline bbs, what are they?

Oct 26, 2009 12:49am
I was at AEX last week, and saw a bag of bbs that looked like glass. Upon asking my friend about them, he told me they are several times harder than regular plastic pellets, and are used mostly for sniping.

Bioval .27g's
Some say-That it's impossible for him to wear socks, and he can open a beer bottle with his testes.

I have a question for you people. I have listened to alot of people whine and tell stories about these bbs. Although it seems to have been decided one bb will not hurt more than another if they are the same weight and shot at the same velocity, is it possible that the bioval bb's maintain velocity for a longer period of time than others, thus making it seem as though they hurt more? I don't have a chronograph, but this could be easily tested by some one who does. Find the average muzzle velocity of the bb's when fired from a rifle as compared to another brand of the same weight bb. Then fire through the chrono at a given distance, and compare the averages at different distances. All of this being done with the rifle clamped down and in an indoor area to rule out any unwanted factors. And the more shots fired the better, to provide better averages.

That is a possibility. And I know that the heavier bbs will maintain velocity longer. But what I'm curious to see is that if these bb's are more dense and of a high quality, will it effect the fps or how long they maintain velocity. If it is a better, more perfect sphere, it could potentialy do both couldn't it? And could the density change the amount of energy transfered into the bb when fired? I realize I am probably over thinking the properties of an airsoft bb, but it is rather intresting to think about in my opinion.

Its round, its plastic, it flies strait unless you put a spin on it, its non lethal, its made better than some other options... yea you're over thinking it. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction so the same amount of energy will be transferred to these bb's as to others. Its muzzle energy may change from how it touches the inner barrel as it passes through as well as by other factors. Density will not change the ENERGY transferred to the bb, it will however change how the bb passes the energy off to another hard object on impact.

The concept that you are wrestling with is an intuitive function of motion/movement we know as moment of inertia (how hard it is to start/stop) and material compasition (you keep using the work "density" but that is not correct).
Seek the Narrow Gate, for the path is broad and the gate is wide that leads to destruction.

Well cool beans, I got to learn somthing today.
