WE GBBRs Any good?

Aug 16, 2011 4:04pm
Whats the general feedback on the WE GBBRs? Both in cold and warmer weather? Every review I find is just someone going over the looks and fps, not the actual long term performance or durability...

there are two floating aroung in my group. both WE SCAR lights. theyre kinda unreliable in cold weather. and still not too amazing in warm. great looking and all that but usually out played by stock echo 1 rifles. However, ive heard great things about WE's new m14. and ive had a WE mp5k that works as good as the maruzen version. so it may just be hit or miss. but even if you get a "bad" one its still gonna be an awesome toy to plink soda cans with.

The first runs were cool, and unique, but it wasn't till they got to the open bolt AR's did they really start performing.

I have a closed bolt we 416, and have had nothing but problems with it, even after spending 200.00 on upgrades. However, the new open bolts are supposed to be a lot more reliable.

The open-chambered models have more reliable and accurate hop-ups. Also the bolt locks are much better as well unlike the old brass models. I modded my scar from brass to open-chambered and its a huge improvement. I have also tried the M4 open-chambered and they certainly are more effective. But as others have posted, AEG's still have the major advantage with their larger capacity on mags. A GBBR player can be effective if your aim is good and shoot conservatively. The sound of the shots are also good for the psychological effect.

I have a stock WE SCAR and just bought a stock M4a1, both closed bolt systems. Ive only used the scar with propane and it had the usual symptoms (shooting and hooking to the right, leaky mags). There are plenty of well written guides for maintenance and mag sealing on the net to address these issues. The market for used great condition closed bolt scars and m4 is plentiful. Coupled with most of these used guns include between 3-5 mags makes for even better deals - as most people cant handle the maintenance and care required for GBBRs and/or the limited ammo capacity or want to get the latest open bolt "version."

Well, since it is propane, there is a bit of a drop, just like pistols and whatnot. But I have an NPAS system so I can increase the output a bit to raise my FPS. If I charge my mags for a full 30 seconds, I can fire off all 30 rounds and still have the bolt lock. Average is about a mag and half worth of bbs, less than that in cold, but still enough to lock the bolt on the last round; as long as your mags are properly sealed of course. When I reload the mags, Ill top them off with a quick fill of propane. Dont know about CO2 other than its supposedly not affected much by cold, but more wear on the gun internals. And each mag will need a CO2 powerlet capsule on each reload or so...

Running the NPAS and propane what are you putting out accuracy and FPS wise? I specifically am eye balling the M16A1 WE, which I believe is specifically a newer open bolt.

Its enough of a pain in the ass managing a decent impression without having to deal with a substandard weapon. Stick with an AEG

I've spent the last 1.5 hr reading up on the WE overall GBBRs and the M16a1. Not really a headache worth having just for a cool blow back effect. Gonna just pickup a CA M15A1, found several vendors with plenty of the old school 80rd TM VN style standards in stock. Trying to narrow down the proper late war gear now.

Yea I'm not looking for beamer performance, but if it requires more then a basic cleaning, lubing and maintenance then it's too much of a hassle for me. I'm not a tech and don't wanna become one... The blowback, recoil and effects look great on the reviews and videos, but after all the detailed reviews and experiences with the WE i've read it seems they require a good amount of elbow work to keep running, more then just the basics.

Yea, they are cool for sure, but not super dependable IMHO. I have never messesd with the KJW or WE systems, only the WA, INO, and GHK systems and I have owned just about every ESCORT system. The only thing close to reliable is an ESCORT with HPA. Gas in mag has issues...when your propellant is a gas that is under pressure and tempature affects the expansion of the gas as much as it does with green, propane and Co2...bad shit is gonna happen at some point unless the gun is constantly maintained.

you might want to e-mail daytonagun at opsforce and see if he can custom you an upper for the kjw. Or if you're ok with external air which johny has already eluded to ask him to make you an m16a1 with escort internals. even escort guns when running perfectly though usually aren't a match for a well tuned aeg. they are way more fun though.
