I have my eyes on two different aeg's, both Classic Army. One advertises an 8mm bearing gearbox, and the other 7mm. Is there any significant advantage/disadvantage to having or not having that extra millimeter?

The ABS(blowback) models all use 8MM bearings. All the other CA guns with bearing use the 7mm bearing.......... which fail a lot more often.

What's a good way to remedy the 7mm failures?

Fix it when/if it breaks. Replace with solid steel bushings.
