I've been hearing that the Wells brand warrior 1 L96 is prone to critical malfunctions if you upgrade it? If this really is true,(and not jsut the results of improper upgrades from the people I've heard it from) is it all upgrades or certain ones? Appreciate any enlightenment i can get on this subject

Alot of clones aren't designed/engineered to be upgraded(if engineered at all).
I never had a problem with aftermarket parts in the one I had, but I may have been one of the lucky ones.
Don't know about the l96, but the vsr clone they have is junk. I bought one to modify only becuase it was cheap and I didn't want to ruin a nicer gun, it was poo though. I had so many things break on the gun (although it always shot OK).

The biggest issue is well doesn't work on consistency from gun to gun. Both my cousins had bought one and they were both different internally. Not part wise but this ones bolt had a different pull then that one and the triggers where different. Look inside the internals are seated at different angles. All the castings were horrid.
alright i appreciate all the advice.

The UTG L96's can be nicely upgraded. I am not sure about the Well's ones.
My favorite moment at ASBG:
My friend had one and we put a ball bearing spring guide in it and new piston/piston head and it changed the performance significantly, I don't know what brand the parts were but if you can track down something that will fit in there it's worth a shot.
