Wow. It got pretty serious on here in the last few years. I see a lot of panties twisting on this forum lately.
There is a lot of 1911/Glock comparison here.

You can take any gun and position it till it's comfortable in your hand. And you very well maybe be able to bullseye shoot it at insane distances with that grip.
Not needed = irrelevant

you're right, someone can make a(one) proper well placed hit holding any horrible ergonomically designed peice with enough practice.
9mm.
"Remember Jimmy Mackaway on the yard used to say, If you wanna be making moves on the street, have no attachments, have nothing in your life you cannot walk out on in 30 seconds flat in you spot the heat around the corner..."
It's like anything else. Take one gun (or caliber), and some people will love it, some will hate it, and some will be indifferant.
sure it's only a .22 but I really don't have the need for anything bigger then that.
Own both a 40 and 9mm XD, like the 9mm more, its easier to control and it's more accurate. Also I would get the 4" instead of the 5", my 5" is accurate, but the 4" seems to help with quick targeting. Be sure to break in the barrel with some mil break-in lube, it does help. Use a bore snake for that and cleaning. Don't go .45, just aim for the head if you have to, 9mm XD will get you there fine.
Go to a shooting range that has handguns for rent. Keep in mind these are used guns, so performance isn't/might not be perfect. Shoot a variety of calibers, and different styles of handguns in the same caliber. It might seem expensive that day, but the money you save on buying what works for you will save you $$ and a headache in the long run. My personal example: I shoot fair- to well with a .45 GI 1911. I picked up the gun a couple years back fired off a few shots and hit gatorade bottle from close and far distances. When it came to purchasing a weapon I chose 9mm Beretta PX4 (stupid decision I shoot horrible with both the beretta PX4, and 92F) and made that choice solely on the fact it is a home defense weapon and I felt my follow-up shots would be faster, my main reason was cheap ammo, I could shoot it more frequently, and therefore be more proficient with the system. I made a bad decision, the gun still does not work for me, and its been just over a year.
First off take into consideration what your going to use it for, self-defense, a duty weapon, concealed carry, etc... Also how much do you want to spend on not just the gun but ammo.
I met a man a couple months back that has shot more people with a 9mm than most military platoons put together. His opinion...
