Caelas' New Player Guide: A Work in Progress

Feb 17, 2011 2:17am
5 Months into airsoft, I have culminated a huge amount of information, and I would like to take this time to direct new airsofters in the right direction. While airsoft is all about what you put into it, research is paramount, and before you start putting items in your shopping cart, you need to really consider your options.

Great review! I have not personally owned anything from VFC but some I have talked to have been happy and successful with them. That is the only brand I did not see on your review but that could be for a reason again i have not yet owned on. I own a KWA m4 cqb and have been very happy with the solid externals and great internals. Lipo ready is a very nice part of their rifle line
impossible is nothing

I would recommend updating some of the info on your guide, as some of it is off. Firstly, JG/echo 1's guns (talking about guns with the V2 gearbox) may not be all that great externally, but internally the parts used are really good, but they are thrown in there by monkeys. With a tune up they are very good guns.
My favorite moment at ASBG:

I personally have owned 2 JG AK's. I havent had any problems with either. I sold one off last year. Owned it for abou 2 years and I never had any problems (except with magazines).

case in point i only agree with about half of your facts, while i think making a noobie guide is a good idea, you are putting way to much personal thoughts into it.

Perhaps you'd like to point out what you don't agree with, I'd like some help constructing this, I had no intention of making this a solely personal endeavor.

While clones are at first economical, they often fail externally (Pieces breaking off, not poor trades) or internally, forcing one to buy a new AEG, by which point the price equals a KWA... Each of the brands I listed has models that fit for different budgets, I would go as far to say that a used gun from the better manufacturers would be a much better choice than a clone. There are other options as well, such as Classic Army sportlines and G&G combat machines (A brand I forgot to mention), the latter of which fits the profile you speak about very aptly. Well made plastic makes them tough, and the internals are great for casual play. If someone wants to airsoft on a regular basis, their best bet is to purchase from one of the reliable and slightly more expensive brands. A player who is deciding whether or not to get into the hobby is probably better off renting a gun at ASBG than buying a 150$ clone...

Talk to other owners of lower end AEG's, they are often covered in tape, had lots of work done to them, and the reasoning is simple: Poor quality control and FPS focus, rather than hop-up focus. Firing at 400 fps, a JG will have a much shorter lifespan because the quality control for its components is not up to the same standards as higher priced brands. As I stated above, other companies counter the FPS issue by using reinforced internals or by using a superb hop-up system (Marui). There are of course a few discrepancies, such as Echo 1's M14, which performs admirably and used on semi will last a long time. A well maintained China clone could last a while, firing on semi, regular cleaning, and burst fire rather than full auto are all examples of good AEG care. New players are much less likely to do these things, and as a result, problems arise and guns break. Higher end brands will last considerably longer in new players' hands, so long as they aren't treated like trash.

you wanna buy your 12, 13 14 year old kid a $400 airsoft gun for his first time playing great more power to you, im gonna buy mine a $125 that way when he gets bored, breaks it, gives it to a friends, loses it, has it stolen, im out $125. When he has played in the game for year or 2 and sticks with it, and repects the game and the gun and knows how to use it, then ill buy him the $400+ gun or he can buy it and earn it himself. Regardless of what we think as old men, look around the game is changing jsut like paintball, our future of keepign this game going is in the hands of 14 year olds and thier fathers, not the vets who have been playing for years, we gotta embrace it to grow not shun and hide from it.

Ok, but this is coming from an Senior in High School, who had to save up for his own stuff and who waited 2 years to get into the hobby. At 12-14 years old, I see your point, but at 15, 16, and 17 if they decide they want to get started they can earn a higher end gun which will last a lot longer and be an item that they can cherish, work on, etc. I know it sounds a little pretentious, but I am simply trying to offer a path with less pitfalls. When your kid breaks that 125$ gun, are you going to be him a new one? It really is each unto their own, and I will modify the guide DRASTICALLY in order to reach out to every type of new player. I am glad we have had this discussion, because arguing over information is how we can provide a better document for new players.

Theres been talk of which is better and why not to get Product X over Product Y for years. It happened when We had the ACM Clone companies come onto the market. Initially, yes, they were extremely poor in internal work, QC, and external. However over the last 4 years, the quality of these brands has matured to the point in which they are just as relayable, and prone to breaking, as the higher marked brands. Not all, but any company can have a lemon fall into the hands of the player.
Feb 18, 2011 6:25am
Yes, that is exactly what I was going to add, each brand has specific needs, which need to be addressed.
