One of my favorites to shoot. Are you getting it from big5? If I remember correctly they some packed with Cosmoline Grease. I dont remember how to get it all off so google it. I would just make sure the gun is in working order. Check the bolt, straight barrel, all the parts are there.

Most of the Big 5 ones seemed pretty good shape overall. I haven't seen any really scary ones from there.

What he said about the rifling. The critical part is the last 8-10 inches before the muzzle, and expecially the rifling right at the muzzle. I bought an Indian Ishapore Enfield from Big 5 some years ago and it was a crappy shooter until I had it re-crowned. What happens is that all those years of low paid grunts running cleaning rods down the muzzle wears away the rifing and can even make the bore slightly out of round. It only takes a little irregularity to throw the bullet off.

i am getting it from big 5, i know the gun has the kick of a mule and i hope to keep its awesome wooden finish and it legendary recoil, i am looking for the long version and as i look at all the models i found out finland got ahold on alot of the mosins and even made some of their own.. which kinda scares me :P because i want the soviet version not a finnish or east german one

My mosin nagant works like a charm. I can nail milk jugs 200 yards away. For the price of 120 dollars it works like a gun that you would pay 800 for. Also ive had it for 4 and a half years and not one wobbly or missing piece on it.
When you think it's safe to go back into battle...well look for my stick grenade.

Make sure you get a Russian one, the difference in quality is crazy. The ones made in Russia will have been made by one of two companies. Tula Arsenal, or Izhevsk. The Tula Arsenal will be marked with a Arrow inside of a star behind the bolt, the Izhevsk will be marked with an Arrow inside of a triangle. If you're lucky, you'll find a Tula Arsenal with a "C n" stamped below the star and arrow, meaning it was used as a sniper rifle.

I think they have trigger locks on them. Ask for it to be removed when you select yours so you can release the bolt(pull bolt to rear as you hold the trigger down) to check the bore better.
