Upgrade questions.

Apr 29, 2005 4:44pm
Hey guys, I had an airsoft question for all you airsoft techs out there. I was curious, I just upgraded my gun and doesn't sound as clean and quite like it was when I had it stock, is that normal? Also, what battery power do you guys suggest for each spring upgrade? For example M90, M100-8.4V etc., etc. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'm not one of the airsoft gurus, but the only time I get some odd sounds from the mech is due to the motor..... I havn't shimmed a mech yet, so I havn't had the chance to troubleshoot tight gears yet, hehehe.

I used a Hurricane kit with an M120 and ICS steel gears. I also changed the bushings to a brass outer ring with polycarbonate inserts

Yep, sounds like a combination of shimming and motor adjustment. You may want to have it looked at if you're not sure of what you're doing...

i say a lot of it is the ICS gears...

I adjusted the motor correctly. The noise isn't that bad, I mean it just doesn't sound like it did when I first bought it. Maybe it is the ICS gears??

Probably. ICS doesn't have a reputation for high quality internals...

That and upgrade parts wont neccessarily make your mech sound like a ferrari.
you look hungry...how about some bbs?

Ya it works great, but it doesn't sound like it did when I first got the gun. That's why I was curious if most upgrades are like that or because of some other reason. I also heard you aren't supposed to use anything above a 9.6V battery, it's better to run and 8.4V with higher maH. Well, I tried using a fully charged 8.4V 3000 maH and that sucker died without using a full hi-cap. Thanks for all the help though guys.

Actually, the most important number to look at when choosing a battery for performance is discharge rate. I've got 7.4v Thunderpower Li-Po batteries that will outrun a lot of 9.6v batteries out there, and I've got NiMH batteries that are identical in voltage and mah, but are grossly different when it comes to performance. (Namely, the 8.4v GP1100 NiMH vs. the el-cheapo 8.4v 1100mah NiMH.) So generically saying that it's safer to ramp up the capacity of an 8.4v vs. using a 9.6v isn't really accurate...

Ya, I'll look into that. But I have another gun that I bought from somebody else and I just use a 9.6V battery and it is running fine. Time to open up the gearbox and check again. I guess what I meant was that the ROF started to drop maybe after a quarter through the mag.

Yea, if it is eating juice that quickly there has to be some sort of resistance problem.

Thanks for the link but I already looked and used that site as a guide to my upgrading. Thanks for the thought though. Like I said, I haven't field tested it yet. I just noticed the ROF drop after about a quarter of a hi-cap mag. It probably could be the battery also but just telling you what I observed and my concerns about it. I know with a 9.6V battery it works fine but with an 8.4V, it loses juice after a short time. Thanks for all your help but I guess until I can get a good field test, I really can't let you guys know more details than the testing I did after I upgraded it.

Well, If your gears were shimmed to tight that would drain your batt quick. And at the same time would get the motor and the batt hot. Also would blow your fuse, if your still running one.
Apr 30, 2005 6:35am
Well, the fuse is still there. As for field test, I just meant taking it out to my next game, shooting it and finding out how much juice it really takes/how many shots I can shoot till the battery die. That's why I was also asking what is a recommended battery for an M120 spring. I'll let you guys know and give you an update. You guys are all to helpful.

Great idea on the video!! sounds to me like the gears are binding or are to tight. really whinny, more then normal I would say. bummer.....I have gun problems too right now. :( good luck to the both of us.

Thanks, I'll be opening up tomorrow and see if it is too tight. I honestly think it's not too tight, maybe too loose...

Hey Dennis, last week I put in new gears (Systema High Speed) and they sounded just like that. I had them tooooo tight. I took the gear box apart took out most the internals except the shimmed gears and actually screwed the box back together and noticed I was getting too much resistance trying to turn the sector gear. (When I just held the gearbox together with my fingers it wasn't quite as tight, so try screwing together). I re-shimmed (by reducing a couple), screwed the gearbox back together and gave it a spin and they spun freely. My gun definitely sounded better, and now I have high speed happiness.... (BTW am using a 120 spring too)....

usually the only gear sound that you should hear is from the motor.
