Normally I wouldn't care about stains on a backpack (and the reason I didn't think much of it at first) but the fact that the grease is just seeping into the main compartment and all over my clothes inside when I'm using it is maddening.
I would just wash the whole thing, you could be careful on the pads but it shouldn't matter that much

If a wash doesn't get it out, go to the dollar store and look for this stuff called orange goop. Comes in a little round container with an orange lid. Our family has used it on everything from cooking grease to motor oil. It works well and leaves a nice citrus smell.

I don't think I'd use orange goop on something cloth... I have a feeling it would never smell right again.

I use "LA's oxy clean" on grease and grime. It works great, and comes in a tub of beads so you can make a paste or a liquid. Orange goop is a good alternative, youll be stuck with the scent though for a while.
if it is just a matter of the grease soaking through then a SIMPLE fix is to put your clothes in plastic garbage bags inside the pack. and an added benefit to that it is helps keep your stuff dry if the pack gets wet :)
