hey this is panda here and i got my labtop for 1200 on xoticpc.com try there they are super cool plus no tax and you can find some good deals. my labtop gots a video card i think it is a 200gt or something like that its great for gaming but just dont like playing games in class and so do my teachers lol but ya they got some cool deals. also check slickdeals.net they have some good stuff to. good luck on the search
most basic question that needs to be answered is how much do you have to spend on one? :p
I recommend you browse various stores online. ASUStek makes very cheap laptops and they have a good warranty if you register them on their website. 1 year accidental damage plan for free (meaning any type of damage and I mean ANY). I waterlogged my laptop and got it fixed just for paying shipping one way.
I was looking at the Alienware M11x but that doesnt have a disk drive, so a sales rep reccomended the studio xps 16

DO NOT buy a Dell or an Alienware. You can find better deals elsewhere.

For PC gaming, I do not recommend a laptop. The best and cheapest way to have a gaming PC is creating a custom desktop. Check this website out:
imakidwithguns is right. Desktop you can get twice as much for half the price (ok thats a bit exaggerated..) but in general they are cheaper for more. but if you're set on a laptop (like i was) an easy way to do it is monthly payments. I bought my laptop on QVC and they dont check credit, it's straight buying and i only have to pay $200 a month for 5 months on this great laptop. I'd check it out

Newegg does have good deals on comp. parts, but that's if want a desktop. If you want mobility obviously go with the laptop and search othersites to evade sales tax. Otherwise building a comp. yourself through a warehouse like newegg can save you a bit more cash. Newegg is out of CA so you will get taxed which is why you won't save a huge amount, but sometimes you can get free shipping.
I agree that a desktop computer will give you more bang for your buck.
From years of personal experience, here's how laptops stack up IMO.

Stay the hell away from alienware computers. Everyone thinks they're amazing because they are loaded with powerfull hardware, but they are just a joke and only good for average gamers.
