Looking into picking up my first rifle!
Hey guys finally decided that I need to save the world from paper so any recommendations?
Ill probably get flamed for this, but I love the Ruger mini 14 rifle. fires a .223 and cost around 500$ish I think.
I know what has to happen to a AR to be a CA legal firearm. Is it generally the same for all other pistol gripped semi auto rifles?
yeah it is pretty standard for all pistol grip rifles. either bullet button or monster man style grip plus the magazine 10 rounder thing.

sks can always be a cheap alternative to the mini30. Also to the AK.
If your budget is $500 and you want a good plinker I'd recommend a 10/22. Check out the Smith and Wesson MP 15-22 (It's a dedicated AR setup to fire 22LR)... Ammo is cheap so you'll be able to go out all the time, it comes with rails, so you can add all your fun little attachments and it looks modern / cool.

I would go SKS. Semi auto, but no bullet button. Can use 10rd stripper clips so reloads can be kind of fast. No bullet button BS legality to deal with
if you're lucky you can find some surplus m1 carbines around for $500, but that's pretty rare. Last time I saw one that good was in Daly City, Big 5 usually has them for around $900 so they're not even worth it. And don't buy a new AO one either, they're cheap and they break easily.

If you can't swing a Ruger, I'd vote for the SKS. You can get a Yugoslav for around $400. If you keep the fixed mag you can put a Tapco pistol grip stock on it for about $70. They have a good reputation for being rugged, reliable and reasonably accurate. And ammo is comparativeely cheap (at least for the moment).
I'm probably picking up a yugo SKS soon aswell. Oh and anyone who buys an SKS dont try to make it "Taciticool"... please? :cry:
