Coyote hunting in Idaho? Which gun?

Mar 8, 2013 7:30am
So long story short, within the next 3-4 months ill be heading up to Idaho and I made a deal with my great uncle for me to use his couple hundred (I think it's like 900) acres to go hunting. Now in Idaho yotes are considered pests and have no bag limit, no tags, and no license needed and because of all the land I can take as much small game as I can carry. My plan was to take some squirrels and jack rabbits(maybe even a chipmunk :P) With my Remington 870, and use that as bait for the yotes. My question is, should I use my Mosin nagant with FMJ ammo to take down the yotes ASAP while preserving the hide well, or my 870 with a rifled slug to drop them? My plan was to bring some of the coats back to sell on craigslist for some extra cash and so I'd like to preserve the hide as much as possible. The main issue with the MN is that the danm blast will scare any others in the area away, and the shotgun I don't have confidence will preserve the hide well enough. Also any tips for a new hunter other than hunter safety stuff? Also one last thing, anyone interested in a nice skin (scraped and dried but not tanned) if I have any extras?

you can use heavy shot for your 870 that will drop them quick and is not to bad on the pelts I prefer a .223

you are only going to get 1 shot.....and you won't beable to get close enough to a coyote to use your 870.....go .22LR
Seek the Narrow Gate, for the path is broad and the gate is wide that leads to destruction.

" its because the 44. mag is single action, and quite large and heavy on recoil (especially for my small hands)"

When I lived in Nevada I used a .22-250. Nice range, power at impact. Made a really cool sound at about 150yds when you whack em. It also turns rabbits inside out.

Go get yourself a double barrel shot gun, and some 12 gauge shotgun shells. keep the shells close by. and when you know a coyote is close by, just stand on your back porch and let out two blasts from the 12 gauge shotgun and I promise you that whatever coyote was out there wont bother you anymore. a 12 gauge is easier to aim and easier to shoot. Buy a shot gun, buy a shot gun, buy .... a...... shotgun. ;)

Use a call. Try to be up on a hill. When you use the call, let it work, Be patient. Summer time they are not really that active late in the day. Hunt early in the day or at night. Check the laws on spot lighting, that's what we did in Vegas. They stop when you shine them. Then you whack em. And do some tracking.

The first coyote I tanned, I shot with a 223 though it did take follow up rounds due to poor shot placement.

How does anyone NOT own a .22?

Got ya. I thought it was strange that anyone who owns a gun wouldn't have a .22.
