Does anyone know how reliable running this set up is?

Nope you can do it, I cracked the slide on my TM 226 so I replaced it with a KJW metal slide, I had to swap a few of the internals out but it shoots great and has been for the last 2 years.

Good to know that it works inversely, thank you. However i was asking about a Plastic Slide with a Metal barrel.

Ah I had to reread your question, I got the slide from Gamepod, Craig there was a huge help in me finding the parts I needed. Check craigslist too and the other airsoft forums and see if you can find a parts KJW 226
