If I remember correctly, its legal to own assult rifles as long as they are only semi-auto. That goes for AKs, ARs, etc. but you can buy a full auto conversion, or you could at county gun shows. Im not sure if thats still true but I remember reading about it.

As far as I've known, assualt weapons are illegal in this state unless they are registered. For registration requires being either military or law enforcement. Guns like m16's, AK-47's, SKS, are outright "banned" weaponry. For awhile, California was having owners "register" their "assault weapons". That (in most gun owner's opinions) meant that the state will call you to rid you of your gun when it is banned. This has happened.

About the closest thing you can get to owning a "Assault Rifle" is a Mini-14 PERIOD. Anything else is off limits.

I have a contact over at ATF, I can find out for you, unless he's out of town. As far as I know, as long as it's a 5 rd. capacity, and no bayonet lug. Oh, and of course, only semi auto. I really don't know for sure, mine is a pre-ban CAR-15, and I registered it wit CADOJ. I know this doesn't help you, but for me, I can carry just about anything I want. So I don't pay much attention to all the new laws coming and going, I should though. I'll try to find something out for you today though.
