The three important members in a squad

Jul 21, 2005 5:10pm
Let's say, you and your team picked a point man, so let's go over just what a point man should do: For thoses that don't know what a point man or going on point, is or means. I'll sum it up in a nut shell, a point man is the designated front man, the one up front of all the rest of the team. He is the one that leads the patrol through the area, he's not the lead element or CO. Just the front, lead man at the beginning of the formation. Ok, moving on...the point man leads and scans his 10 o'clock to his 2 o'clock positions. The point man should be far enough ahead of the rest of the team, but in sight of them. Not to close as to not have enough time to warn the team, if he should spot danger. This will of course depend on terrain and visibility. If the point man spots trouble or thinks there is a possible chance of an ambush. He stops and drops down taking cover at a distance from where he thinks there is danger, and with hand signals he alerts the rest of the team. He waits for the team to advance to his position and informs the patrol leader of what he thinks or saw. Then it's up to the patrol leader to determine the next course of action.

dang near by the manual! little add on, if you have inner team communication capabilities use, that instead of shouting. that way you can possibly set up a hasty ambush and surprise them, or move position and outflank them and come up behind them.

Guess we all know who's team we're not sneaking up on :?

tactics schmatics, the red army way is walk in a line with 1 meter spacings when the first guy gets shot that is the alert of danger and the 2nd man now becomes point and so on.

What a brilliant idea! who thought that up!?

seriously, all team members in a squad are important because they all have their specific duties. they come together to perform the mission. that's why it's a team.

wow, i guess i just got flamed! i guess all the warrant servings we've done and drug lab busts, oh and lets not forget the human smugglers houses that we've raided, we've done it wrong. i'm sorry let me go tell my commander, who has 30 plus years experience that all this time we've been doing it wrong!
Jul 27, 2005 12:41am
=) I'll give you a prime example of what I'm talking about. SWAT and Police units may do 6-8 people, but the US Army and Marines do it with four.
Jul 27, 2005 2:27pm
oh no, this isn't a flame war here. i'm just stating, you're reading a manual. i'm talking from experience and trust me, i'm not trying to beat my chest here. now then, during my time with forecon and bn recon, da/hrt and raid was 6-8 man teams. same with the sf unit i was attached to over in a'stan. that my friend was a 12 man a-team. so, yes manuals are good, but reality is better. we use the manual as a GUIDE. but, this has gotten WAY off the original post. So, back to the beginning, basically there is no one important member of a squad, it's the whole team WORKING TOGETHER. That's where the Marine Corps came up with Gung Ho, it's Chinese for Work Together.
