Gun care questions...

Aug 30, 2005 9:54pm
I recently bought an ICS mp5a4 from airsplat and as it is my first AEG i am oblivious to how to maintain these. I have read that you must take apart and oil them. But as it did not come with a concise manual I need help. Does anyone here know of a tut or guide on taking apart and cleaning these. And as a side note, does anyone know where I can get G&P mp5 mags for cheap? airsoftatlanta carries them for 17.99 but they're not in stock...

Your in Brentwood? Im over the hill in livermore. Anyways, you shouldnt have to take it apart and "oil" it for a while. The stock mechboxes come greased from the factory. Now if you take it apart to do upgrades or you happen to submerge it in water, then there are bigger issues. When I rip mine open to work on it, I like to hit the gears and piston with a little grease if it looks dry(it shouldnt unless they are brand new/never lubed). The grease in the guns does not "evaporate" or "disappear" but if you really want to get into it then take it apart after a few games(after doing your hw on disassembly) and clean/re-lube it.

ok, well what about cleaning the barrel as I have read that a people clean their barrels regularly? My gun cam with a cleaning/unjaming rod but not cloths or spunges...(i don't know what they use on airsoft guns). Also do you oil your barrel or keep it dry because when I bought my spring pistol they advertised silicon oil for oiling the slide and barrel but that didn't make sense to me--the oiling the barrel. If it helps I have the ICS mp5a4 off of airsplat.com for 239 if that helps in knowing what I am dealing with.

Well I wasn't going to start until I new exactly what was involved and what to do. That is why I was looking for a how to guide, but if its not something that I must do every 2 games or so then I am not so worried about it. I just went on a barrel cleaning war with all my guns and....wow, all that black stuff is gross, My pistol and my brother's and sister's pistols were just as bad, made a whole side of a tissue almost grey/black. My mp5 was the worst yet too.

i would assume you shouldn't reuse bb's because the company who makes them only makes them for "single use" and cant guarantee anything if you reuse them. when you load them outta the bag / bottle they should be clean and hard, but after you shoot them they might have "foreign substances" (dirt, oil, etc) on them or nicks / dents but if you're shooting inside at a towel i see no reason not to reuse them. just look at them and make sure your not loading some dog hair and carpet fibers into your mag when you reuse them.

I use thin, dry strips off a cotten shirt to clean the barrel with, cuz tissues can leave little fibers in the barrel and hop (worse for the hop than the barrel).

You would have a hard time convincing me to reuse bb's, regardless of how they looked. It doesn't matter if it's a soft backing, when a bb strikes any object, a certain amount of force is exerted on it. There may be internal fractures you don't see, or slight deformation. Think of the nature of water. It seems soft and flexible, but when when something strikes it fast, it doesn't yield as much and whatever strikes it can take some damage, especially if it has a good surface area. Since bb's are round, which gives them a nice wide frontal surface, it's taking a lot of shock. It's not like a needle or some other pointed object, which would pierce through the cloth in the first place.

Clean with a LIGHT based silicon oil on a clean sturdy cloth on your cleaning stick. Do it thuroughly as the oil does help lift grime and dirt from the barrel while lubing it in the process. JUST DO NOT use heavy silicon oils because they WILL jam and clog your barrel and hop-up making it hel to clean up.
