300 fps vs. 300 fps (AEG vs. Green Pistols)

Sep 6, 2005 5:10am
I've been reading quite a bit about the various rules that airsoft groups (not just sacair) play by and one universal rule that isn't making much sense to me is the 20 foot engagement distance on AEG's and the zero foot engagement distance for pistols.
In terms of velocity, Mike, 300 FPS has the same velocity whether it's coming from an AEG or a pistol.

Thanks for clearing that up BlackIce. Looks like I just did a whole lot of math for no reason (other than the sheer joy of it) trying to make sure that deceleration of an object is constant as long as the mass, peak velocity, and distance traveled are the same.

pistols you typically score less hits with too, AEGs people have a tendency to fire a lot of times even on semi.

You do bring up a good point even at 300 FPS. That's why the is the surrender/bang kill rule. And the main saying - "If you don't want to get shot by your own gun that close, then don't take the shot..."

If this is on the lines of safety with fps.

Nah, honestly, I wasn't even thinking about it until Glenn brought it up just now. Was too busy that day to pay attention to stuff like that.

Go to bed? Are you kidding? Now I've got to calculate the required velocity to orbit a .20 gram bb...
Sep 6, 2005 8:07am
Actually, bb's have a small surface area, which makes penetration that much more dangerous. Unlike paintball, where bruising is more of a factor, airsoft is all about piercing.

Hypothetically, if I were to continue modifying my mk1 carbine (tight bore, high flow valve, weaker return spring) it might be shooting about 600 fps on green gas, I do have a can of red though... I'm assuming that isn't going to be legal for play. I thought I had read somewhere that there was unlimited fps for snipers.

I've never seen anywhere that allowed anything above 550fps. If you did, safety must not be a concern.
hehe thats like buying a Daisy $20 from walmart and using it...if there was no concern on safety, i would do it.
