What the Army uses...

My brother called from Iraq today. He's in the US Army and he's been in Iraq for about a month. I asked him about his gun (since he knows I'm interested in airsoft guns) and he told me about his gun and the accessories.
Gun control is not Crime control.

It really all depends on which optics and for what purpose. I personally own the top of the line EO Tech and it is great for quick aquisition of a target (Mounted on my M1A1 SOCOM). However for all around combat use I would probably go with an ACOG since EO Tech's do not offer a zoom capabilities like the ACOG's do.

My uncle said some of his men are using M1 Garands out there. He personally likes to use the MP-3; he said it was basically like an MP-5 with a longer barrel, and in .40 S&W. He also was saying how his favorite pistol was the P226, and off duty was the G19.

I would have to agree with Dave on the account that in most instances US service personnel will either carry M1911's or M9's. Spec Ops operators generally carry what they most feel comfortable carrying or carry whatever the situation calls for.

not an M1 for like the mujahideen haha? why would they not just give him an M14?

okay, as most of you know this already, as an operator in a'stan, most of us had 1911's or an h&k. i had the misfortune of getting an m9 since i was a reserve "strap hanger". the units, not the individual issue the weapons, the armory isn't just go in and grab whatever you like. spec ops units do get more of a variety though. also depending on the unit mission i.e. the DA/HRT guys all used 1911's OR the H&K model. Now in my new unit I'm ISSUED the P226.

the people in Iraq wont be getting red dot systems for their M-16a3's but they will be getting the new M16a4, which comes with a red dot scope already on it. pretty sweet. as for M1's being used, i highly doubt it they havent been in comission for years, however, the new M1A has recently come out, which is almost identicle to a classic M1. it looks alot like an M14 without the outer barrel, with a flash hider instead. this is all information that ive gotten from local Marine recruiters and a good friend of mine who is former SWAT and is currently working for TSN
And shephards we will be.

M1A is the semi auto civilian version of the M14. you are thinking of the M21

Ok,i am not an "operator" (not really sure if anyone really uses that term) in A'stan. But i can tell you that thier is one place you can find soldiers using the M1 grand, and that is the OLD GUARD,any HONOR GUARD,or any of the service's DRILL TEAMS(not sure about the COAST GUARD). What i can tell you is that we,and the rest of the ARMY use a refurb (no full auto) M-14. Not an M-1 grand. There is a huge differance. This is not the only long gun we use,but it is definatly not an M-1 grand.Hope this helps.

While I was assigned to the 91st Division Ceremonial Detachment(Color Guard), we had the 1903s. Nice and newly reburbished stocks and and every metal part was chromed instead of blued. Chrome bayonets also.

The M14 is still used by the Army, but by specialized units. More as an M21 than as an M14.

The M14 is used now in the m21 format as a sniper/ adv. marksman platform by the Navy/Marines and the army. The M60 is still a pretty good over all machine gun and works well in a support role. Although it's a bit beefy and bigger than the M249 SAW which is why the m249 is issued to standard infantry mostly while the m60 will be used more for either support teams or as a stationary emplacement.
In my humble opinion the United States need's to ditch the M16A2 type of platform as a standard "battle rifle" and go back to carrying the M-14 or we should focus more so on developing the 6.8mm round that is in trials at this point. 5.56mm is weak no matter how you toss it, it's still a frickin hopped up 22LR.
I use various grain TAP rounds at work for indoor/CQB work. Work seems to change it every 6 months according to whomever is telling them which is best. 40 gr TAP has last the longest. Outdoor/everyday Patrol duties is the 64 gr, and for comp I use 55 gr JHPBT.
