how many have seen the "new" navy recruiting commercial? the one that shows all the "seal" stuff. they talk about going to college! yeah, uh okay, for sure, as an operator, you won't be going to no college! you may have time to get maybe some correspondence courses down! okay, not bashing, just found it amusing. good bye :)

Years ago.....and I mean yeeaars ago, I'd signed up under "Delayed entry" status. This meant that I went to Oakland, got a physical signed a contract stating that I had up to a year to finish school and go report to duty or to do otherwise. The only reason I even thought of going to the Navy was that the promised me the G.I. Bill. That meant I had $25,000 for college. I had signed the papers but realized what the job I agreed to take was really all about. Seaman's apprentice. Now, keeping your mind out of the gutter, this meant that they had me as nothing more than the ships janitor, hull painter, barnicle scraper or just outright B I T C H. I saw none of that worth four years even for said college fund. The good thing about delayed entry is that you swear in twice. Tthe first time was when I was in Oakland, but I never swore in the second. Seeing how my recruiter was raking me over the coals, I decided that the Navy wasn't my thing. So I dropped out of school, got work towards home, and got a GED (at the time, the military only accepted HS grads, as told to me by my would be recruiter). All that to keep from getting screwed for 4 years.

that's why i didn't do too well as a recruiter, i couldn't lie to my poolies. i'd tell them the truth. it paid off in the long run cause i'd run into some of them later on and they'd say stuff like, "damn sgt., you were right, there are some really f'd up days!". Why lie, all it does is make that person that much more negative about reenlisting down the road. however, on the larger ships, i guess they actually have professors from some colleges on board, and now with the computer on line campus it's easier too. i knew an operator that was taking some courses on line whil in a'stan, and also ordering correspondence courses from colleges. i remember looking into tx state for awhile. but the way the commercials make it look it looks as though you can actually go to a campus. then of course there's the new montgomery gi bill that is good, really good for when you get out and it even helps as a reservist or guard. so don't get me wrong, in no way am i trying to make it sound as if i was bashing recruiting, i was just laughing at the commercial. just harder as a tier 1 operator is all. if you want to know what that is, just pm me.
