I can second the Avalon or if you want to go with more luxury for your lady, something in the Lexus line.
avalon over the legacy any day? even on a nice snowy day when the roads are nice slippery?
Besides even AWD isn't going to fair that much better if the road is pretty snowed in. FWD handles pretty good in light snow, RWD you don't want to have in it...

I would like Navigation and bluetooth as my baseline criteria.
My current cars are; a 1981 Volvo 245 with 487,987 on the clock. It seats five with all out kit.(outside of general matanance, a cracked rubber engine to heaterbox line, and a broken wire this is the most reliable car I have ever owned.) And my newest car is a 1998 Volvo V70 T5R AWD with 98,000. (The T5R is getting more and more ipd tricks added as I can afford them.)
Wiskey Tango Foxtrot....? Over.

look into the BMW's. The 3 series are excellent, i will buy my son one in a few years. Just bought a 2006 "5" series and yes there "pricie" around 50k. But 4 years of free maintainance and 4 yrs bumper-bumper coverage. oil changes, wiper blades, the whole nine yards, just tires are not covered though. The "I drive" and 6 speed steptronics transmission is pretty sweet and nothing drives like a fine german car! When your spending 35k, whats 5ks more. (about 50.00-60.00 more a month). Buy something that you really want, not something you should have bought!! The G35 is not a bad buy. Costco has a good auto buying program-look into it if you don't like to haggle about pricing. The have a set price over factory invoice for Costco members. BMW's were about 2k over factor invoice- about $2500- under sticker price. As you get older, service is more important to me than price. So far-BMW service has been extremely good to me. Loaner cars, quick service. PM me if I can help you out or if you want a little more information. Oh yeah, I'm a poor state worker too!!!

LOL, it will fit 5 slim-med build people fine, trunk is decent size. Plus resale value holds pretty well for the first 4 yrs- (waranty)
We bought my wife a 2005 VW Jetta GLI 6 Speed Turbo (bought it new at Niello through the manager....friend of ours...great service, by the way!). At the time, they were around $26,000 + tax and license. Thses were the last models with the body style, before the new 2006 versions (which we think are ugly :(
I know you are looking in the $35,000 range for a vehicle, but I wanted to share this info about our '05 Jetta GLI, because it's quality equals that of a $35,000 vehicle.
all about the all-new mazdaspeed 6.. who!
Can anyone tell me the advantages of front wheel, rear wheel and all wheel drive. I don't know if this true or not but aren't all wheel drive models more expensive to fix?
