When you're out on the field, how do you distinguish your team from the opposing team? It would seem that a lot of people would get eliminated by friendly fire because it appears everyone is wearing bdu's that are somewhat identical.

either we tape up with red or blue tape, or each team wears diffrent BDU like onteam woodlands, and one team desert or now camos at all. And u can ussally tell whos bad when the other people start shooting at u.
Sides are usually divided by clothing types ie woodland vs. desert vs. civilian or we have colored arm bands signifying which side we're on.

i also know that there are a lot of smaller teams that make up SacAirsoft. If i were to show up to one of the games, would i be able to just choose a side (red or blue) and start playing, or do I have to join into one of those smaller teams?

No, you don't have to join any of the smaller teams, those are totally seperate. Depending on what you are wearing you will be placed on a team, or by what color band you wear.

I always wear a funny hat, that way, both my team and the other can recognize me........and/or shoot me.

Usually you can tell by which direction they are aiming or heading :-P
