.30 cal not realy an Infantry LMG...had to have a 3 mancrew..one to carry the tripod, one to carry ammo and one to carry the gun...The mg42 has a 3 man crew but the whole weapon system can be transported by one man. the other 2 guys are just a long to carry ammo and extra barrels. low rate of fire and prone to jams, the later version the 1919A4 or A6 I think is what it was called had a shoulder stock and a pipod. but still a heavy weapon ...I have lugged around both and the mg 42 blows the .30 cal out of the water!

At 1200 rpm you'd have to swap barrels. If the thing heats up and starts to droop... bad mojo.

You must also understand German tactics of the time as well. The German infantry squad supported the MG with riflemen. While the US MG supported the riflemen.
