I have a project due for my sociology class at CSUEB, part of the project is to ask men and women of the military (active or retired) their opinions of Francis Gary Powers. Specifically what do they think of his failure to destroy the airplane after having ejected and his failure to commit suicide.
Now, is this the U2 pilot that was shot down over The Soviet Union and was put through a trial for espianage in the 50's?

I'm not a service member, but I know enough about the subject to point you to some decent sources.
I've got the book, have had it for a number of years, it's great. ;-) In actuallity I'm closer to the opinion of Kelly than my prof. Just following through with what he told me to say/ask. =P

My father whom is long since deceased used to know Kelly Johnson fairly well due to my old man's former USAF service as well as ties to Los Angeles celebrities. One of the funny things that most people do not realize is how far ahead of his time that Kelly Johnson truly was. In a book that I own called Project Aurora the question was asked by Barry Goldwater "What's next?" referring to the next logical step after the SR-71/A-12 was built. Kelly Johnson's response was one word......"hypersonic". Mind you that Kelly Johnson stated this back in the late 1950's/early 1960's. That man was light years ahead of his time.
Put it this way, if you think that the SR is retired from service you'd better think again. The US is not about to give up a platform like the Blackbird without having something newer and faster in service or at least in the final R&D stages. Aurora does exsist I can guarantee that.
