My mom uses the Pentax IST-DS. She bought it with two lenses for around 8-9 hundred. It's not THE best camera out there like Nikkon, etc, but it's certainly the best bang for your buck.
Canon Digital Rebel 'tis what I got does the job nicely. Want to get a longer lens but they're quite expensive :?

My dad hasa Nikkon D70 digital SLR, but that would run you up about a grand not counting extra lenses and filters.
I use Canon system. I traded all my Nikon gear when I decided to start using digital technology. On the Pro-sumer end of things, you won't notice a difference, but when you're shooting for billboards and stuff, I like my Canon glass better than Nikon.
Every day above ground is a good day.
