Think of paypal as an internet form of Western Union. You can use your checking, savings or credit card. You say how much and to whom (email address) you're sending the money to. You can also "deposit" money to create a balance. It doesn't cost anything to send money and your privacy is guaranteed by paypal. The receiver of the money does not receive any financial information except for that they just received money.
