These things rock. Their diameter is just a hair larger than a lot of the other bb's I've used. When I pull down the follower to load up my Glock 26 mag and load it up with 15 rounds of Excel, there's plenty of room and it seems as if the mag was designed to hold 15 bb's. With the Airsoft Elite, it seems like the 15th round just barely squeezes in. I haven't chronographed it yet, but I did have to reset the hop setting after switching to AE bb's, so that's another indicator that the diameter is different from the Excel. If they are indeed larger, it could produce a better seal in the barrel and increase the velocity. Or, it could be that the larger diameter elevates the position of the bb and results in more pressure from the hopup on the top of the bb, so a reduction in hopup is needed to compensate. Or it could be a combination of the two. I have a jar of Excel bb's left, so I can chrono the difference between the two later on. I'll keep you posted with results.
