Dec 4, 2006 6:49am
hey im 15 and now getting around the age of wanting a car. my choices where a 91 rx7 or a 95 20sx. so i was thinking is there anyone on sac air that know anything about 240sx, the rx7 or rotary engines in general.? i was going to get a 240sx and buy some stuff for it like hks turbo and a intercooler, stuff for the engine so that it can handle the turbo. stuff like that. also does anyone know where i could learn to put all this in myself? because i realy want to get into cars...almost as much as i wanted to get into airsoft

rotary are a pain in the ass to maintain, so be prepared to spend lots of money with that. and fyi, a turbo kit on a 240sx will not pass california smog, so if you don't know any insiders that'll help you out (which is illegal), you will have a bitch of a time trying to reregister every two years. also, if you get pulled over, you are screwed if the cop suspects illegal mods.

+1 on what Andrew said about rotarys...First learn how a turbo and intercooler works, injector duty cycle, knock/retard, 02's, alcohol injection (crappy CA gas), BLM's, F/P, CFM V Injector size...BTW HKs box kits are garbage...turbonetics and spearco is what was on my GN...

Wow. Calm down there Evo boy. We're discussing a car he wants, not wether or not he can afford insurance for a 10-15 year old import. Which is bad enough for a first time male driver anyway.

that thing about smog isnt neccisarly true. what you do is, when you have them do the fuel mapping for the turbo(which you wont do yourself cause anyone whos good at it has taken classes and has degrees etc) have them make two fuel maps. one for full boost, and one for very little boost. when its time to smog your car, dial the boost waaaaaaaaaaay out so its only at like 3-5 psi. then the emissions wont go up too much. after it passes smog, dial the boost back up to 10-15-17 psi and make tons of HP again

if i were you, i would just get a car that comes turbo'd from the factory. less to worry about, and you can easily upgrade the turbo if you'd like. the hard thing about turboing an n/a vehicle is the prep, i.e., having the correct compression ratio, having strong enough internals, injectors, etc. sure, you can swap in a turbo kit or whatever, but that's far from doing it right.
· Supreme ChancellorDec 4, 2006 8:07am
This is CA. If your turbo 'kit' isnt factory and it doesnt a have a cool little sticker saying its smog legal, then it isnt smog legal. Period. Regardless of what your tailpipe says.

Thats why you buy C.A.R.B. exempt parts...which most major companies tend to get exemption orders for thier parts

xxsparx, don't forget, you have to pass VISUAL too. that means if the car wasn't meant to have a turbo, but there's a turbo on it, then something's wrong. a ton of my friends uninstall everything before smogs, then put it all back in after (the ones that aren't lucky enough to have hook-ups).
Dec 4, 2006 8:09am
xxsparx, find me a cheap CARB legal turbo kit and post it up. there's only a few, but they're either hella expensive or they suck ass. if i wasn't right, everyone and their mom would have a turbo'd integra or civic right now.
Dec 4, 2006 8:14am
I havent done the research. But, it would be possible to take a turbo off of a stock car that has one, then get a C.A.R.B. exempt manifold and exhaust system with a little custom work. Since the turbo would be off a stock car, its considered stock. Believe me I know, I put a muffler on my car from a stock GTO so that my car is louder, but the law can't do shit because its a stock part. The same would go for a turbo.

Also if you do this, try and get stuff in brushed aluminum or a flat black, and get some 'turbo' badging for your car, theres a lot of dumb cops out there that just look for shiny. or if they are REALLY dumb(which has happened) they will think the turbo badging means it came stock with a turbo

the OP was interested in a 240sx. now correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not much into jdm, but i'm pretty sure there aren't any stock turbo 240's in the states.

Here is a car I found on Ebay
Dec 4, 2006 8:44am
nice find, but you'd probably have a hard time registering that car in cali. it's in canada first of all, and second it's jdm spec

Id rock the RX as a "stock" track car. Its nothing special but it would be diferent. If you wanna look cool for school the go the 240. Turbo's are overrated IMO. If you go this a turbo make sure its matched to your engine; NOT "this is teh biggest most coolest terbo in teh summit catalog" According to my auto teacher who has a cousin working for one of the tubro companies, a properly matched turbo doesnt lag much(the cool magazines whine about turbo lag). Take auto in school. Trust me it helps. Make sure its a manual transmission or dont even bother. Good luck.

I'd recommend, if this is your first car, a nice, slow, reliable, good-gas-mileage having import. Honda or something of that sort, 92-whatever.

Coolwater airsoft is a bunch of queers hence they all dress pretty and match all the time, most of them are simply adults that live at home still, when they arent doing airsoft stuff they like to play D&D and have circle jerks, they all voted for Jon Kerry and are democrats

thanks dude but i some what prize my life. i probably wont go drifting in ANY of the cars i choose. if i did it would be in a shit car with fuel rails and a nice suspesion because i dont want to ruin this, i already have a car, its a toyota truck. i dont like automatics. in fact my truck is manual. and i wanted a 240sx and rx7 because of the engine, the 240 was the only standard V dohc car i liked and the rx7 was the only rotary engine i liked....
