If you are on a budget, get a 9mm. Ammo is about a 1/4 less of what 45 is going for right now. 9mm is plenty for self defense as well.

Just so you know, the new S&W M&P pistols are having issues with magazines dropping free without the button being hit. I would hold off on them for a few months, let S&W work the bugs out.
