M14 cutoff lever

Apr 6, 2007 2:06am
So I (Shawn rather) just upgraded my M14 with Guarder steel gears, Systema piston head, System spring guide, Systema Bushings, and an SP-100 spring. Now I've read that M14's have a tendency to lose semi-auto due to the cutoff lever wearing down because of the upgrades.

hmmmm ive only heard about it on DMR that are semi auto only with full auto turned off. I know wild turkey was ahving that problem, hit him up.

The cutoff lever will wear out with exessive use of semi. My cutoff lever wore out after about 2500 rounds (I am the third owner and the previous owners liked to use semi a lot). It doesn't matter what type of spring you use. The harder material of your gears may accelerate wear, but I wouldn't worry about it that much. Full auto will not cause any wear on the lever.

well there u have it.

Wild Turkey, did you ever remedy the problem? If so, how?

I haven't fixed it yet. But I have an idea on how to fix it. Just need to solder a few millimeters of material on the cut off lever where it gets worn. I just don't have an iron hot enough for solder thats strong enough. I've tried to fix it using a 25w iron, but my solder broke off after about 25 shots.

i dont have an m14 in front of me, i'm thinking the shrink tubing could be a viable fix if you already have a problem. If I'm not mistaken, the cut-off lever has an extended arm that kicks the switch out of place. It might be possible to dremel off material close to the tooth that engages the lever...add a couple of layers of shrink tubing on the exterior arm so it could kick out the switch...

Would there be any way to modify a V2 or 3 cut off lever to fit in the M14?

I used a very expensive Hakko soldering station and heated the part as hot as I could and used a general soldering line. The part is very small so it was basically get a bit to stick and then file away till it fits.
