What is a good 1911 .45 to purchase? *Updated*

Apr 17, 2007 3:16am
I am looking at getting a 1911 style .45 pistol which holds at least 8 rounds. I would like a pistol that is reliable out of the box but that is pretty reasonable. Is Springfield a good starting point? Only thing I don't like about Springfield except certain models are the grips. They seem to like wood grips and I prefer black and plastic.

You can't go wrong with springfield. I love mine and it shoots great. Grips are dirt cheap. If you are looking for highcapacity then look at para or if you got the cash and you can buy one then look at the new hk .45 that thing is sick and I think it is 10 in the mag and one in the chamber.

Colt defender - It's small and compact, has rubber, finger-grooved grips, and has a 7+1 capacity. It's one of my personal favorites.

A springfield loaded or mil-spec would be right up your ally. I would ditch the factory magazines though and use the flush Colt 8 round mags or the wilson mags. can't beat a life time warranty either.

In my springfield I have put over 10,000 rounds, in less than 4 months and never had any problems with it. Changed only a couple of springs due to wear. This thing is a beast! You can't beat for the price. But I have heard good thing about the new taurus 1911 supposed to be a killer pistol for the price?

If you can, get yourself and OLD Colt. Series 70 or older. Outside of that, my choice would also be Springfield Armory. I'm not fond of firing pin safeties on 1911's. Just more parts to break and/or go wrong.

+1 to mastercampers.com Bill is way cool. Bought both my pistolas from him. Good service and competitive prices.

My thoughts on the SA TRP if that helps at all.

Are Chip Mccmormick Power Mags good for a Springfield 1911 or Kimber for that fact?
· Supreme ChancellorApr 18, 2007 1:04am
Yup. Never had a problem with mine. Chip Mc or Wilson combat 47D's are good to go.

From what I heard is that the factory Colt series 70 have the curved main spring housing grip, and no firing pin drop safety. The factory Colt series 80 have the flat main spring housing grip, firing pin drop safety, slightly longer trigger unit, and tighter tolerances cause of using new technology such as CNC machining to built the piece.
