M203 Grenades

I've got a little question that's really of no importance, just out of curiousity. How do those M203 grenades work? Are they actual projectiles that are shot out of a launcher or something else?

Its like a big ass shotgun. The shells hold the ags and bb's and launch out all of the bb's at once when triggered. No projectile besides the bb's.
