Drop leg vs. Chest-mounted holster

May 10, 2007 6:48pm
Just thought I would share this article with you guys. In our little world of plastic bbs we love to emulate our grunts and operators. As such we've seen the advent of the dropleg holster in our community because of it's tacticool factor. This article states that the drop leg is highly impractical and the chest mounted holster far more useful. What say you?

I think it has to be based on personal preference, personally I like a drop leg holster, but I also like a belt holster, as it doesn't get in the way so much but its still easier to draw for me when prone.

i like the leg mount too. i got a buddy with a chest rig and he's constantly screwing around and un-tangling the sling from it and i could tell he gets annoyed by it but wont admit it.

Depends on the environment and situation.

i like drop leg holsters for the ease of pulling my pistol when crouched. since im a big guy my chest rig is a little larger than most and that makes i harder for a draw from the chest.
All alone he turns to stone

Whoever wrote that article has never gone prone and crawled in a combat situation. Sure, "Crossdraws" are great if you're in CQB and you're standing/squatting, but if you're in a field with nothing but a mound of dirt between you and a great deal of suppressive fire, that nice pistol is going to get stuffed full of dirt in a split second.

thigh holsters and belt holsters.

the only place where the holsters are out of the way are on my hip. imo.

For airsoft just experiment with whatever holster you want to carry. In airsoft I use drop leg, hip or small on the back cause my vest is usually loaded up with magazines, granades, and the camelbak thing. With the AEG on a sling it can be annoying wtih the pistol on the cross draw vest.

He doesn't say it's perfect or it's better then drop legs for all situations. He states that it's better for entry-work. Remember we're talking secondary here not primary. If you're doing entry work and unless you're at breach I doubt you'll have your primary slung. The only time you're switching to your secondary if your primary fails. And when that happens you're more likely to toss your weapon then you are to sling it. You're also not going to go prone unless you're shot since entry work is all about mobility. Travel time to chest is far less then it is to the leg.

tried leg rigs, must've been using the wrong ones b/c the rigs just wouldn't stop flopping up and down. the belt setup is just more stable for me, one less annoyance during a game, and the secondary is ready to draw at a moment's notice. Are you and your crew hitting up Ord James?

Thigh rigs are one of those things that must be customized to fit. Spend the extra bucks for a good rig and it's like it's never there. Also having a belt with suspenders keeps everything from sagging/pulling down. In a showdown a drop leg will be faster ;)

Friend of mine runs with a Chest mounted Holster, and swares by it. If you know me, I've yet to own a good pistol, but I do have drop leg gear. I personaly like it, and I'm thinking of getting a leg panel when I finaly get a pistol. We can all agree its mainly on personal taste like Freg already mentioned.

thanks James, I really want to make it to the second Ord game, but I'll go when you guys'll make it.

those soft drop legs flop arouind with the exception of one that i had where the leg straps went around the gun and thigh instead of just the thigh. But my Safariland is awsome and doesn't flop one bit.
