blown transmission update
So i was taking my car back from college to CA. About 4 hours on the road, the tranny blows, and i am stranded in the middle of no where. So i am stuck in a medium sized town for about a week while the new tranny comes in. does any one have any idea why it would blow, if i would over rev it, kept the fluid levels up, and had it checked regularly?
what is it? just caus eyou kept the gear oil full doesnt mean it didnt start leaking and hour before it blew ya know. is it a manual or auto?
that freakin sucks balls Ben, sorry to hear about the car troubles.
My best advice for new airsoft players:
as far as i know, there were no know leaks. auto transmission on a '01 trooper w/ 4wd
1) oil in the tranny

this thread is hilarious since everyone is saying tranny instead of transmission.
was it ever slipping? or shifting hard? What exactly did they say at the shop? that it just blew? they should have a better explanation.
yeah, it was slipping a little bit before it blew, and what i mean by that is that it began about 2-3 days before the actual incident. the mechanic said that there were metal shavings inside the transmission after he looked at it.
ok... so did it lock up on you or just didnt go anywhere when you pushed on the gas?
ok so here is what happened when it blew: the engine went from about 3000 rpms to about 6000 in a splint second with nothing devoted to the drive system (lilke it was in neutral) meanwhile a boat load of smoke coming form the car. Pulled over, and got out, and checked underneath it : loads of liquid pouring out of the car.
ok well it pretty much blew then like you said... all the smoke was just trans fluid touching anything and everything thats hot (exhaust pipes, motor, ect.) but without seeing it in person its hard to give you the reasons. the case could have cracked, could have snapped the shaft, tourque converted could have busted who knows.
yeah, but there were people near him. where i blew it there was no one. Great Plains ring a bell? yeah blew it on those, and we had a car go by about every 10 min doesn't sound like a lot of time, but with ur car down, and desolate flat looking at you; it is.
ya that sucks man... well its good that everything is up and running and you're safe.
yeah. still gotta wait to get the car back. hopefully the new transmission got the ok from the inspector that came.
Maybe it was just old?

on an '01?? i mean, 6 years, but that doesn't seem lie that much.

i had mine go at 70 mph on the freeway, luckly my shitty rear differential broke (old ass truck) and i didnt lock and up and die, but ya log on aim whore. lol
thanks for the info and the new oil reccomendations.
I updated my current situation.
If the case was cracked then I'd have to say bearing failure. Most likely a thrust bearing of some sort. If the transmission was slipping for a while then that tells me the fluid has been getting really hot causing the bearing failure. Most of your modern cars have bearings with plastic cages.
