Tips on improving groupings *update*

Ok I admit it I am a terrible shot. I just found out my grip is incorrect but I haven't been to the range lately. :( Now here is my question am I suppose to keep both eyes open when I am shooting a pistol? If I am is the target or my sights suppose to be fuzzy? Thanks in advance.

Should keep both eyes open all the time. Maintains maximum FoV and reduce tunnel vision. Alot of it is muscle memory. You have to train yourself to focus in a wider area and not fixate on either the sights or the target only. Perhaps using an airsoft pistol stand about 10ft from a target and practice drawing up slowly. Mostly just drawing and getting your eyes and arms to get into firing position. Then move to firing, attempting to balance your focus. Increasing range a little at a time. Then gradually move on over to RS.

Well, it really depends on what you want to do. In this case, that would be your grouping, and therefore, sight picture, grip, and trigger pull are the primary concern.

He's got a 1911. I'm guessing he's probably "pushing" in anticipation of the shot and his shots string lower and lower on the target. It's hard starting out with a large calibre pistol because you are succeptable to developing bad habits.

Good advie there. Snap caps tell you a lot. Great for malfunction drills if you wish to do that.

Thank you for the tips so far. I will provide some feedback the next time I go to the range. Anyone interested in going to the range in the near future?

As far as what people are saying about trigger control, I think the best way to learn is with a revolver. You can watch how smooth your trigger pull is by watching the hammer.

I can meet anytime after work 3:30pm weekdays , I am free on weekends especially Sunday. Is there a range close to you and me so we can meet halfway?
May 25, 2007 4:09am

Go to a range and get lessons. I have spent bank on lessons so far and my shooting has vastly improved. It is worth every penny to have someone that shoots at an elite level to help you. They can watch you and tell you on the spot how to improve. The learing curve is crazy steep. You will after one day shoot way better. But it peaks and it gets crazy hard to improve. One last thing think about how you want to shoot , bull's eye, ipsc, defense, etc. what ever style you want to do and yes you can do more than one, the last match I was at one the better shooters was swearing by bull's eye shooting. He says that with it he can call his shots, it got me thinking. Anyway this way you can go in the right direction. If curiuos on the differences go to a range and ask or do a internet search. Just my 2 cents.

I know you can try to get hold of an off duty policeman. I know they like to do things like teach on their off days. Let me see what I can do, I know a few Sheriffs who might like to have a training day. I'll post back on this in a day or two.

I will be free this weekend if anyone can make it. Depending on who wants to go it can be at The Gun Room or another location. I am not sure how many lanes are set aside at Cordova for pistols.
