I've thought about doing this as well and am trying to figure out the best way to do it. For starters, I would use some type of degreaser/ oil remover like simple green just to make sure you start with a clean surface. It's best the apply several thin coats of paint and allow them to dry completely before adding subsequent layers. I would say an airbrush would be best using model paints. There really is no way to prevent the body from scratching. Thick coats of paint might help a little bit, but that fact that the plastic isn't actually black, but instead painted, will lead to the inevitable.

I painted a couple M4 receivers. Just cleaned it with isopropal alcohol. And used sprray can paint. Forgot what brand. But what ever brand you get, you better test it on a small part to make sure the plastic doesn't react to the paint. Does not scracth or chip as easy as you would think.

just get the krylon brand camo paint. mike painted my gun with that and its perfectly fine. You're not gonna get a paint that always stays on there forever but after 3 games, the wear is really not that noticable on my gun. mostly just around the sharp edges.
