Heres a general tip on school projects. Tell him to do it on something he already knows about. Its going to be much easier. If its not to late to change it..change it.

Well, we've made some definite progress in the last several hours of research. It seems that we can take an existing model of an airsoft gun, send it to an engineer and have blueprint drawings or a CAD file made of it. Then send them to a prototype manufacturer and have the parts all made, and then shipped back to us, and then assemble! TADAA!
Never fully trust Wiki for info. just as a FYI. But I know VFC/GB has some videos of they're end production line, when they first releasing the AK-74U.
Prototyping isn't cheap. One-offs for prototyping typically runs a couple thousand dollars. The cost alone of getting a simple drawing/sample in CAD is also quite expensive.
