This is a picture of the version 5. The whole mechanism is reversed...

Here, I went ahead and used paintbrush to label all the parts of the gearbox for you too.

whoa whoa, very interesting.

realy compact, I guess it needs to be if its fitting in an uzi.

not sure but that GB could be used for a M1 garand or M14

The barrel does extend through the piston and spring guide. Aftermarket parts are non-existant, so power upgrades aren't really feasable. At best, you're looking at an M100 spring, tops. The gearbox is not made of pot metal. The gearbox is plastic, so even if aftermarket parts were made for it, it could only hold so much power reliably.

That is the perfect gearbox for an mg-42 AEG

sounds like a lot of work kevin. I would support it though.

eh...plastic gearbox

looks like its wired to the front, like an external battery box might be required. Are the wires to the rear just for connecting the motor, or can you get an uzi stock with a battery compartment? Also, i wonder what the extra space in the pistol grip is used for, since it doesn't house the motor

I finally got it figured out. The gearbox design is not primarily for space savings. It's actually a bulky gearbox. The box, as well as other sources, claim that the Uzi is a "hard recoil" AEG. The gearbox is designed that way so the piston slams BACKWARD, so it sends the shockwave from the piston head slapping the cylinder head back towards your hand. That's their attempt to increase felt recoil. It doesn't work, though. It only seats the gun into the hand better.

couldnt the design also be becuase there is no other real good spot for the engine? with the mag in the grip and not enough roomfor a P90 style box.

Possibly, but even then, it could have still been configured to have the piston move forward. All they had to do was invert the orientation of the gearbox, with the motor and gears in the front and the piston assembly in the rear. It was done for the "realistic recoil" effect, which doesn't work.
