Help with Gaming Comp Build

Sep 28, 2007 5:45pm
What do all the techies here think about this build? I tried to keep it around $1600 while decently powerful and very upgradeable. Is there anything I should change or be concerned about?

that video card is rediculous.

So you're saying I should get an 8800 GTS instead? Maybe later on I could run that in SLI hehe.

Like I said, it's about $1600 for a solid and upgradeable system. My current desktop cost $1500 with monitor and I've had it since 2003. All I ever did to it was add a gig of RAM and swapped videocards once.

What is your game of choice on the computer?

I like FPS and RTS. In the last year I've played Command and Conquer 3, Company of Heroes, Civilization IV, BF2142, BF2 SF, CS: Source.

hmm, you probably dont want the quad core processor, there are VERY few programs out that can utilize 2, let alone 4, and there aren't very many games planned at the moment to fully utilize 4 cores

Right, there isnt anything really that can utilize 4 cores yet. And the 8800gtx is overkill. But the quad core wont be overkill in a year. And in a year an 8800gts isnt going to be enough. Its like while your spending the money, why not spend the extra $200 now and not worry about it instead of potentially spending more money replacing an inadequate card in a year. I have an 8800gts. It is a great card. It doesn't play Crysis or oblivion at full settings at 1680x1050 which is the native resolution of a 20/22" monitor. Yeah so Crysis isn't optimized yet but it aint gonna change that much as far as performance, and if it can run a high end game now at almost high settings, youll be playing high end games in a year at medium settings. The quad core is $277 people. The E6600 is $227. When purchasing a computer thats good for tomorrow and not just for today thats pretty petty cash. Imo, spend the extra money on the better parts so you wont worry about upgrading later, its more expensive now and cheaper for tomorrow because you wont have to upgrade it in a year. If you have a pcie card right now you could just use it to hold you through untill the 9800gtx launches which will drop the price of the 8800gtx. And as history shows the 8800gts probably wont launch till Q2 next year. Or just get the 9800GTX and dont worry about buying a new card for 3 years, the 9800 will have 3x the power of the current GTX, as the current high end cards even as powerfull as they are, aren't really what DX10 takes to run with lots of eye candy on. It will be at the $550-600 price point.

My thoughts exactly about the quad core and 8800 GTX.

Personally, I'd go with an 8800gts...they are the best bang for the buck cards...ever...

Nvidia hasn't said anything specifically but their VP confirmed that 9800 were slated for a early winter sale, but that could change since it isnt official.
