question on CA guns and upgrades
How long do you think a CA M15's internals would last with just an systema highspeed motor? Everything left in like the stock gears, stock metal bushings, piston, spring, blah blah.
The gun should be fine with just that upgrade. I wouldn't really worry about shimming or anything else until you upgrade the spring. As far as I know the stock motor for a CA is pretty much the same as an EG1000 motor.
I didnt think shimming was needed until you replace the gears or bushings?
If you upgrade the spring you need to do it. Personally I would do it just to save on the life of my gun, but if you don't know how to upgrade yourself, wait until you have someone actually going through your box to do it.
you dont have to shim for a systema m100 spring, even 120s, but its good if you do, on stock gears, as for the motor question, you can run it, just run short quick bursts, that way you wont destroy your gears. especially if your running a 9.6v battery...oh yea shimming is needed anytime you maintence your gun, but yes when you upgrade, bushings, gears, and even springs at times.

i dont see why you would need to re-shim the gears when doing only spring upgrades...
When should you shim?

I just eyeball mine...pretty much trial and error. I check for how much play there is on the gears...i do this before putting back the screws, the spring, and the spring guide...you have to check and see how thick the shims are too so the middle gear doesnt sit higher than the top and bottom gears...

site is down due to the storms in florida and their server being there..
What I was saying about shimming is that if it is a new box from the factory (that is it was never opened) then the shims won't be done quite right. I think I've only come across one or two guns that did not have to be shimmed. If he is only upgrading the motor there is no need to shim, however it is a good idea to shim the box eventually just to insure longer gear life. Not necessary, but not a bad idea either.
CA gears are harder and thicker; this would suggest greater durability.
would be better if he did check if the shimming in the gearbox is fine though...prolly the best thing to do...he doesnt have to...but he could...
The only real difference between the CA and TM gear box is that the CA box does not have as much dead space, otherwise mechanically they are the same. As for personal preference in motors, I haven't really seen the systema motors, but I know that the CA motors have the pinion gear held on by a set screw, so there is no special tool needed if you need to replace the pinion gear, just an allen wrench.
here is a very informative link:
actually, the newer gearbox has a 7mm bearing...
wow this thead is most interesting, such technical information that can benifit the up and coming airsofter...YAY

It depends on the gun, right now the RIS guns are the only ones that are coming with the 7mm bearing gear boxes. All of the other ones are still 6mm bushing boxes, but they are upgraded boxes, so there is little to no dead space.
