Military Discussion
well i have been thinking about my future lately.
you can pay for school but you cant buy class
Just be an engineer. They get paid decently, have noncombat jobs available, and you'll never have to live with the idea that you killed someone if that happens. (atleast It's less likely)
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people happy?
im pretty sure the need some engineers in the sandbox. and i would have no problem with killing someone. i was considering CCT in the airforce...and trick my mom into thinking that im doing AirForce because i wouldnt want to see combat...but in reality :]

Yeah I was thinking about what MOS I'm going to take too. I would like to become a pilot after getting to officer class in the USMC. Any suggestion. My recruiter told me to go with something in intelligence...

Being in the army myself, i would say join the air force lol
comfort is a sign of weekness  :D

Even in the sand box engineers still get things a bit easier than people up front. Less likely to get stuck on a patrol and more likely to be fixin the airconditioner that the airforce has =p
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people happy?
haha ya but engineering seems kinda boring. secret stuff makes the job that much more fun...

I see that you want to become FBI after serving in the military. If that is the case, you need investigative experience if you want your service record to count (from my understanding). If you're set on that you have a couple of different paths both in the Air Force and Army (and the other branches I'm sure).
Like AO says wait a little. My best friend enlisted in the Army in his mid 30's (don't wait that long). Because of his high test scores and his college education he is now in a certain Investigation unit he has already been contacted by a few of the federal L.E. agencies.
If you give to a charity please think of giving to one of these two charities. The Naval Special Warfare Foundation or Navy SEAL Warrior Fund.
i agree on doing my own thing i want to pursue MY dream as being a marine. later work in the FBI or LE.

I looked into joining the Marines about a month ago and the general response I got from some of my Police friends was the same as AO.
that is so good that are kids out there that actually want to serve. I am an active Marine right now. and i can tell you i love being a Marine, but truth to be told, there are time i ask myself...why the hell i enlisted...well i just have to remind myself once a while thats all but this is what i did
Be like Chesty Puller and Marine the hell up!
Whats your MOS
God save us everyone will be burning inside the fires of a thousand suns.
from what i have seen the Army do a lot of "occuping"
I didnt read all of the post here, but from my point of view, I enjoyed the Marine Corps. I loved it so much I stayed for eight years. I served from 98'-06'. I am going to re-enlist but I'm thinking of going infantry. I was a AE (Aviation Electronic Tech. on F/A-18's), in the Corps. The MOS is 6337. The best part of doing my job was no matter what my job is, I was a United State Marine and I was serving my country. I don't playa hate on the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and SOME PARTS of the Navy (Corpsman, Sea Bee's, SEAL's, etc). No matter what branch you sign up for, you still are serving our country First. And thats the most important thing to remember. Sign up for college, tech training, you are serving first.
I have a few friends who are in the armed forces, 2 are Marines and the other is Army. When I considered joining myself they told me not to. They said it with a smile on their face, but they were serious none the less. My friend is an officer in the Marines. He has a BA in criminal justice, and similar to you, he wants to be an federal agent after he finishes. I believe for most federal candidates it is a required 6 years law enforcement or 4 years millitary to qualify for a federal agent position. (don't qoute me on that but the numbers are in the ball park) I myself am currently going into the Sheriffs Academy, and I'm not sure how old you are, but education is a key element in todays law enforcement and millitary training. It's not like it was 20 years ago when if your life was shit, fawk it, join the army. It doesn't work like that anymore. The more education you have under your belt the more they look for you. For most Police Departments they require a minimum of an AA degree. I have an uncle who works for San Jose PD and when he joined all you had to have was a GED. There are so many options once your in, but just make sure you dont get a bunch of false promises. My advice, keep going to school, get a degree to fall back on (Not to mention it looks good on ANY application), and decide if the armed forces is right for you. If your under 22 years old, dont let the ticking clock theory scare you, there is plenty of time. Best of luck, and just remember that education is the key to advancement in any field.
you have a lot of good advice here, so like airsoftbum said, read it all and take the time to think it through. i joined the AF with no MOS chosen... yeah, well i was young and needed to get out of where i was, long story...
that was very respectful to all branches gaurdian. That is a very good quality.
listen to these guys. my cousing just graduated from air force basic and she got it all im wirting and now she is almost done with tech school, and her brother joined the marines and he also got what he wanted in writing and after basic he is going to flight school or something he is becoming... i think he said the crew chief on the helicopter. not quite sure what that entails but he wanted it and he got it by sticking to his guns. good luck in your choice and i will be in your shoes in a couple of years after i get my BA cuz i can totally not afford to pay for law school.
Now i would definitely sign up for the corps, but i dont wana end up being a 0311, and have my mom calling me after every patrol and giving me a sob story that i shouldnt have joined and im giving her all this stress...my dad died 3 years ago, she doesnt want to go through the same chit.
Recruiters will try to BS you really badly. Request your duty station, it is hard, but you can get it. They will try to tell you it cant be done, but tell them if you cant get your choice you wont join. They may say ok, sorry. but they will call you back a week later or so. They want you. Badly. Work your power now, because if you literally sign away what you dont secure in your contract.
Forget reading what everyone put. If I repeat something, who cares. This is from my experience so far:
I am a 33! Be proud of what you are...
whatever you do dont go Combat engineer
"I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country."
As far as going in to the military with a HS Diploma, then getting out and going for the FBI, you wont get far. Choose something that requires a Clearance. The higher the clearance the higher the chances of getting into the FBI with a HS Diploma. And when you do enlist, GO TO COLLEGE!!!! I say get at least an Associates before you enlist, but go for your masters while in. Let the military pay for your higher education. Then try to go Warrant (if able) or Officer. Green to Gold is a great program. To bad I'm choosing the path for Warrant. Better possibilites with Warrant. I will concentrate my skills in a specific system. I'm choosing what I'm best at which is Communication Interception/Jamming. Don't need to know what I'm hearing, just need to do it.
