Just got into Airsoft, because it's one of the few things my boy and I can agree on, he is 13 and we have a couple of cheap spring guns and cheap e-bay AEP's that we play with on our property, we have a 1/2 Acre with lots of trees and 5 acres at grandmas that we can practice on safely, even tho the neighbors know and have stated very clearly that they don't mind (both are NRA members as am I) when the me and the kids are practicing in the back yard with the clear plastic guns, we still are very strict about the rules of engaement and safety, we now want to move things onto another area, meet more airsofters and participate in some of the events however; we do not have the expensive guns or gear and I would like to know if there are other places we can go and maybe play with other newbies so my kid doesn't get discuraged right away, if he fully gets into it we will get some better gear but I don't see the point in spending $150.00 for a gun and $300.00 for a rifle when for about $150.00 we can test it out and see if we want to spend more.
If you're just looking to test the waters on the sport, and to see if you really want to get into it, I'd highly suggest the JG/Echo1 series of AEG's. They have a large variety of guns, which come with everything you need to get started (although I would suggest replacing the battery as soon as possible, they are very low quality), and can be found for around $90-$150 at www.airsoftgi.com. Another good thing to try would be the Classic Army Sportline series. About $125, and it only includes the gun, but you sacrifice the accessories included with the JG/Echo1 guns for better quality with the Sportline.

Id bag my money in the sportline. they have packages for it now and it is a nice economical choice.

Make sure you read the PM I sent you. I covered at least 4 of your questions.

I'm not sure from your post if you want a place first, then a gear/weapon upgrade if you and your son like the larger scale scenarios? With the guns you described (clear plastic springers) I can say you'd definitely be frustrated/discouraged at a Sacair event. Sacair keeps pretty tight control of events connected to this forum, so it also wouldn't work to try and set up a "noobs" springer-only event. Not sure where you're located, but if you want to pm me, I might be able to point you in a couple of directions. It is a great sport, so good luck with the pursuit of it.
